Short guide
Create a different password for every account
We all know the temptation: you invent a password you can finally remember and start using it everywhere. Convenient, yes. A good idea... not really. A long, random password avoids easy-to-guess patterns, and using a different one for every account means a breach at one service does not automatically hand over the keys to the others.
Does longer mean better?
In general, greater length massively increases the number of possible combinations. That is why a long random password usually makes more sense than trying to invent a short, complicated one filled with “clever” substitutions.
When you select several character types, we include at least one from each type and fill the rest at random. If you select letters, numbers and symbols, all three will appear in the result. If a website has those wonderful rules like “maximum 12 characters” or rejects a symbol, adjust the options to what it allows.
0, O, 1, l, I... which one was which?
If you will copy and paste the password, it probably does not matter much. But if you ever need to type it by hand, characters such as 0 and O or 1, l and I can become a small headache. The option to exclude lookalike characters exists precisely for that.
You can also prevent repeated characters or make the password start with a letter. These are useful options when a service requires them or when you have a specific reason to use them. There is no need to check every box just because it is there.
The difficult part comes later: storing it
Generating a difficult password is easy. Remembering a different one for every account... that is where the problem starts. A password manager is useful because it can store long, unique keys without asking you to memorize twenty impossible combinations.
Avoid reusing the same password. If one account is breached and that password also opens your email, a store and three more services, the problem is no longer one account. Turn on two-step authentication whenever it is available too.

No. They are generated directly in your browser using its cryptographic API. We do not need to send the password to a server to create it.
What length should I choose?
If a site allows a long password, use it. This tool starts with 16 characters as a practical setting and lets you go up to 128 when the service accepts them. You do not need to make it short just to remember it: that is what password managers are for.
Can I generate several passwords at once?
Yes. You can generate up to 20 at once. Choose one, copy several or look at them all and think “that one looks good,” even though mathematically the password does not care :D.
Why cannot I enable “Start with a letter”?
We first need at least one letter available. Select lowercase letters, uppercase letters or both and you can use that option.
What does excluding lookalike characters mean?
We remove characters that look very similar, such as O and 0 or l, I and 1. If you are going to type the password by hand, your eyes will probably appreciate it.
